13 April
I HAVE A LOT OF SAMPLES , SO I ACHIEVED MY AIM!!!!
ALTHOUGH I ALSO TRIED TO DO A GARMENT AND I COULD ONLY DO HALF A TOP I'M WILLING TO MAKE AN INCREDIBLE ONE FOR THE EXHIBITION!!
12 april
Today I continued with the designs. I've finished the four hemispheres I'm going to use for the suit. To make the design of the suit I have been inspired by the first book I took from the library, the one related to deformities. |
I have decided to incorporate elements of different origins: to mix in the same garment the contrast of human deformities with the harmonic aesthetics of diseases seen under the microscope.
The result of these designs has been several protuberances in different garments simulating deformities in the human body, disguised by the beauty of the tissues that represent diseases.
When I made the suit top I lost time due to a technical failure that I was able to solve effectively, although this event delayed me because of the frustration it caused me. |
Once the mould had been removed from the hemispheres, and after making the contour of the top around those bumps, I decided to put more paint on the whole set, finishing off some details to improve the finish, without taking into account that the paint would soften.
Inevitably, the hemispheres fell apart and began to collapse. Angry at the destruction, after so much hard work, I found a quick solution.
Quickly, I removed the spheres from the set, rearranged the glass moulds, and let them dry.
Although it was a waste of time due to a stupid mistake of reasoning, I managed to save the top in time and finish it, although I couldn't make the bottom part due to lack of time.

The first attempts with samples were made with random drawings, both for determination and because of the poor control I had of the syringe. To give them a certain geometrical aesthetic, I placed the plastic beads according to some rules established by intuition. e.g. the purple beads on the pink part of the mixture, the yellow nylon thread on the purple part, the blue glitter on the crosses of the pink and purple mixture.
The result was quite accurate, but I still wanted to go further and get the geometry effect.
At my mother's suggestion, I began to use a head with an opening as thin as a needle for more accuracy. I began to try to make geometric shapes following the pattern of the drawings that I made inspired by the geometric repetitions of the initial photographs.
I began to place the beads with a little more awareness and accuracy, producing some more perfect drawings, although I tried to make the geometry not be completely accurate.
I added more variety of plastics and elements so that the richness of the design would be even greater.
5 April
, I found a perfect structure, a well-defined drawing, linked in its entirety to the research done.
Happy with the result, I did not settle for it and went on to deal with the small but decisive problem that arose: |
The stiffness of the new sample is one of the features I didn't like. I ran several tests to see how I could make the mixture more elastic and resistant. I decided to reduce the amount of shaving cream and increase the amount of paint.
The fact of increasing the amount of paint came to mind when I removed the dry paint from the lid of a paint can, noting that it had some elasticity.

Interestingly, the physiological serum available at home is equipped with a syringe as a tool to pour the liquid with more ACCURACY.Precisely, THIS ACCURACY is what is missing in the previous samples. Therefore, they are somewhat chaotic and incoherent.
Casually, in the middle of the project (when I started researching the appearance of the skin under the microscope) I began to make, repeatedly and unconsciously, drawings with a certain geometry like cells. I realized that the patterns in my research photos were affecting the aesthetics of my drawings.
As soon as I saw that syringe, my ideas hatched and became a reality.
Accuracy required in the samples + syringe used to achieve this accuracy when pouring the serum + detailed drawings of the geometric and repetition figures = final exercise
30 march
today already a little devastated by the disastrous results, I began to think of different ways to represent the cells without using the damn mixture that had only turned out to be correct once, since the other times it had turned out to be a failure. |
Then I went back to the beginning, and thought about how I came up with the renowned mix. |
It turns out that the whole process began with the aim of making slime, a mellow, spongy mixture that could be manipulated at the whim of the user, and that was completely flexible. Then I started to visualize different fabrics made with this material. |
I thought about making several threads of this material and weaving with them, but then I thought how difficult it would be for them to hold each other; however, I tried it again.
28 march
Today, the design process was as follows: I made another mixture, this time a little more foamy, but more extended, and I placed the plastic pieces inside the mixture before drying it with the hair dryer but sticking out a little bit. |
Afterwards, I used the hair dryer and the result has been terrible. The plastic parts flew off with the blow of the dryer and the mixture was untangled. Because of the high foam content and the complete evaporation of all the water in the mixture, the result was a kind of paper with embedded plastic pieces. |
Then an idea came to me: Why not use a machine we've been using in class for the last few days. The heat plate, which was used to print paint on the canvas? |
That day in class Gale gave me some plastic sheets that with the help of the tourniquet I tried to fuse with the third mix I had made in London. |
24 March
Today I started my project here in Spain. When looking at my references I decided to go exploring materials. Suddenly, I have wondered what the effect of disease on us is?, and how much we try to fight it, many of them always leave a trail, and some of them never go away. |
When I arrived at the store I tried to select different plastic beads, in simple shapes but with different colors, as I needed several ranges to represent the tonalities of the images previously seen under the microscope
Having in mind this fact, I tried to analyze how it could be represented in a fabric? How could I incorporate several materials (one of them volatile and the other taking eternity to disintegrate) into the same element? |
Some of the materials I was using so far were dissolved in water: paint, shaving cream, dye, baking soda, toothpaste... others were half dissolved: pva glue. So I had to find one that would take forever to disintegrate: I clearly thought about plastic. |
7 march
Today I decided to focus on my Life project as is the one I wan't to continue. I worked how I could introduced the feminist symbols that I have been thinking about, to the skin samples. I started working with different weird material such as compresses, and hair removals etc. I have done another thoughtful collage I pretty much like.
6 march
Today I've been focusing in the industry project so I can get it down as quickly as I can. I started using a lot of clear symbols such as money with blood, and fake fur with blood. I have decided that I want to use this two materials at first, and mixed them with various symbols related to the themes i'm using.
I have continue with my life project and I have come with great satirical ideas I can use for the representation of the woman's discrimination in the world
5 march
today I have ben researching about bad things that happened in harrods. I descover a bit about this industry mistakes in the past: fur trade and tips styling, for example. I have been working with collage and materials exploration. I not that excited about this project, as I don't like this industry, although I think i'm being true to myself, and that something I pretty much like.
With my life project, I started suddenly talking about one of the themes I wanted to talk about: feminism. I have been thinking about just talking about this, as it is buy it self a huge theme with can bee expand.
4 march
these few days I have been trying new material. it was really interesting to see how some on them work and some of them not. The first days it was a disaster: I just get the proportions of the mix all wrong. sometimes the mixture had so much water it spend for like a day drying. now, at the end of these few days of experimentation I realize that maybe it was a waste of time, as I spend more than three days trying materials( toothpaste, shaving cream...). the thing is this developement was important so I could continuo with my idea of doing fake skin.
the industry project seems interesting by the way, I think I know that I want to go against the industry, because I don't like how it works.
11 April
The last design came from the shallowness of the depth of the designs, which, even with an exhaustive design, showed more prints than fabrics with a certain dimension. For this, I was inspired by the design I made with newspaper balls. |
The textile made with such a newspaper mould is acceptable and aesthetically pleasing; however, I wanted to go further by refining and professionalizing its aesthetics. That's why I replaced the newspaper mould with some glass bowls, lining them with the same paper as the previous ones. This time I tried to keep the bumps to a minimum.
However, even so, there are still some folds due to the slight stiffness of the paper. I've been busy doing the samples of the bowls because it's more complicated than the flat ones. As it was a more liquid mixture than the first voluminous fabric (due to the reduction in the amount of shaving foam), gravity played a role against it. |
The droplets from over-mixing caused the drawing to become distorted, and this was an arduous task. The beads also fell when they were placed in the mixture.
However, I have managed to achieve the desired shape and design. |
8 April
by matching the amount of foam to the amount of pva glue, the glue was more effective, and allowed me to include plastic beads, glitter, beads, and plastic and nylon threads.
The result was the desired one and I had finally achieved the ideal solution. |
An elastic sample capable of being moulded, with the beads incorporated in the mix with an unsurpassed aesthetics
3 April
With this sample of shaving foam, pva glue, paint and the use of the syringe as a tool, I made a specific drawing, with a peculiar and convoluted shape imitating the structure of some of the images I had found.
This time, I let the sample dry on its own, because if I used the hair dryer again, the drawing would fade away.
This posed a further challenge, as if each time I had to wait until the next day to decorate a sample, the objective set for this project would be unattainable, and production time would be short.
31 march
Still, I have tried to make the mixture without borax, a substance necessary to achieve the desired consistency.
The outcome was a mixture of pva, shaving cream and paint.
The activation agent of the mixture, in the absence of borax, is the physiological serum, but I remembered that previously this addition had not been useful.
29 mach
The result, again a disaster. The pieces would come out of the mix and stick to the paper, the mix would remain rigid like a piece of cardboard, and that didn't look like a textile or anything that could be considered decent.
Since the pressure alone didn't stick, I asked Gale if I could put plastic in the hot plate. She said no, but she gave me a really good idea: use an iron, she said! |
In that flashback I had that day in class I realized that to embed the plastic pieces in the dough I could use the heat of a plate that would melt the plastic little by little but would never burn the soluble mixture |
27 march
When thinking of a disease or a diseased cell, it is possible to distinguish certain parts, although they all seem to be integrated into a whole, as if, in spite of a composition of several factors, the group were harmonious and homogeneous. |
For this reason, I decided to try to integrate the plastic parts that I added to the mixture in a homogeneous way once all the water had evaporated. |
I then put the mixture in the oven to melt the plastic and make it into a single piece. This occurred to me as a result of the experiment I did with the records in part two. |
The problem was that when it was necessary to apply a high temperature to melt the plastic, the other mixture would burn. |
The result was full of errors: the soft mixture burned, the plastic did not melt completely. In short, the experiment ended with a sample burned on one side with solid pieces of plastic, meaningless. That's why I decided to put the oven aside for a while. |
Although aesthetically this sample was not entirely bad, there was something I did not like; something that was not aesthetic for my eyesight, nor did it fully represent the image I wanted to convey.
26 March
Today I set out to make the first mix of soluble materials I make at home. Of the samples I did in London, I only managed to make one that I could use, and coincidentally, it is the one that took me the longest to make: the third. I did this third sample without thinking too much about it, letting myself be carried away by intuition, because I did not measure the quantities of materials I was using. So, this time, when I made the mix, I decided to start again and experiment to see where my intuition took me, as the last time was the only thing that helped me get a good result. |
I've ended up with five bowls full of pva glue, shaving cream, baking soda, physiological serum, no idea what to do with it, and no good results. For lack of ideas, I decided to mix them all up; I threw them all on a tray and limited myself to making a geometric drawing with a spatula imitating the geometric drawings I had made in the sketchbook. |
12 march
Today I realized that using the slime mixture and then putting it in the oven it makes this amazing FAKE SKIN!!
11 march
I have been researching a bit about how could I mix the skin with my feminist message, and I have came up with such great ideas!
10 march
today has been A great day, my fake skin is working!
9 march
Today I have been the whole day again figuring out how I can represent skin. I have tried latex, gelatin and ova but they do't work AS I liked, SO i'm thinking about using slime, because is the last idea I have left.
yesterday after talking to Patricia I realized I have to keep on working with my idea instead of focusing too much in the materials
8 march
I have finish my industry project examples. I fill I have wasted a bit of time trying to figure out how could I use these strange material. I'm stressed because I fill I don't have enough done for my project tutorials. the skin samples I had at this moment, I had to throw them away as they have dried and they no longer look like flexible skin. I'm just going to develop my techniques again
